What You Need to Know

NZ student loans work differently to other debt. No interest at home, but the rules change when you leave.

0% interest in NZ
As long as you live in New Zealand, your student loan has no interest. Every repayment goes straight to reducing your balance.
Repayments via PAYE
Once you earn over $22,828/year, 12 cents of every dollar above that threshold is automatically deducted by your employer. No action needed.
Overseas? Interest kicks in.
The moment you've been outside NZ for 6+ months, interest starts accruing (currently 3.5% p.a.). You must also make direct repayments to IRD.
